First mentioned in a document from Emperor Otto II in 980 as a royal residence named Otmanica, the Schloss acquired its present day elegant Baroque façade and classic Habsburg yellow livery in the eighteenth century. The terraces around the house lead down to the elegant gardens, adorned with ornate eighteenth-century statues of Greek gods and goddesses, with lawns which drop down to the enormous swimming pool with its fountain in the centre, and tennis court.
The property has been in the Owner’s family since the 1950’s and much care goes into maintaining the Schloss, respecting its history, yet ensuring it is enjoyed by family and friends by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There is a wonderful balance of sophistication and comfort which embraces the formality of the reception rooms and the more informal areas.
With a large and spacious dining room on the ground floor, which can seat up to 18, the rest of the living accommodation is on first floor. The impressive Long room, with views over the garden, leads into a comfortable salon with study area and stunning tapestries, as well as a large bright drawing room with grand piano and a large variety of games and wonderful works of art.
A cooking service is included 6 days per week, and the cook will prepare delicious local and European food, 3 meals a day from the house menus (cost of food and drink extra) and the housekeeping staff ensure the house is kept clean and running smoothly.
The estate has a working organic farm, one product of which is their own Schnapps, and a traditional tasting can be arranged; the huge traditional barn, no longer used for animals, houses the efficient woodchip boiler system; and a livery stable where riding can be arranged.
In the Winter, the house is well stocked with skates and sledges ready to borrow should conditions on the lake allow, otherwise there is an ice rink available for hire nearby. Ski resorts are around an hours drive away, so easily within reach for a day trip, safe in the knowledge that you can come back to a warm and cosy fire and afternoon tea after a day on the slopes.
Summer temperatures of 30 – 35 degrees mean that you may not want to stray far from the pool, but there are also beaches around the beautiful lake Wörthersee, as well as boat trips, and the lake on the estate provides opportunities for fishing, rowing and picnicking.
